The tank hasn't finished growing in yet, but when it does I think I'll be pretty happy with it. Here are some pictures that I took recently.
I will get some more pictures up later.

Haven't updated in a while, but here is the finished product with the canopy that I didn't document at all. It was definitely the trickiest part of everything. I couldn't get the front to line up so I had to shimmy the side so it is 1/8 inch higher than the right side. I guess everything can't be perfect. I guess I have to be ok with that. After all, this is an AQUARIUM stand, and people will be hopefully looking at the fish and not the minor messups.

Going to put a couple layers of polyurethane over the top to give it a nice protective coating. It is turning out pretty good for my first ever woodworking project....I can't wait to get to the fish part of this though. I am looking for a used 75 (or 90) gallon tank with minimal scratches and then I can start on the matching canopy.

So finally moved out to Denver and we are starting to get settled. The lighter color is whitewood. It is a pretty simple design but I have had a lot of fun designing it and putting it together. The tank will sit 37 inches off the ground, with a lip of the stand coming up to 39 inches, Perfect for looking at the tank. I am hoping I can finish the tank for around $125 total. I am not nervous about the tank fitting the stand, but I am going to wait till I get the glass before I build the canopy. It will be about 8.5 inches high and will utilize a piano hinge with toy chest hinges to support it when i am doing maintenance, and feeding. My wife wants a darker looking stain on the tank, but I dont know anything about doing that.

I would like to make this into a discus tank, , with a harem of apistos, but discus are so stinking expensive it might be a little while till I have a school there. I already have 2x55 watt kit from AH supply, (going to buy one more) and a eheim 2217 canister filter. I want to go to a hydor inline heater to eliminate the clutter in the tank. Substrate will be 80 lbs of eco-complete with a Co2 injection. (not sure how I am going to diffuse...any suggestions?) Here are some pictures my wife took while I got the main structure of the stand finished.

Most recent photo, maybe the last of this tank. We are moving soon to Denver and as soon as I get things the way I want them, it is time to break down the tank and start over again. Though, my wife has said that she will let me get a 75+ gallon tank, which means I will be parting the three setups that I have here out within the month. Hopefully I can get enough to buy a tank and everything I need to get a 75 going. This time I am going to buy all used stuff, no need for new aquarium stuff.

So I finally went to a pressurized co2 system using a 20 lb cylinder and a Milwaukee regulator and solenoid. I also ordered some dry ferts from bestaquariumregulator.com (Rex Griggs site), and I the difference has been quite dramatic. I have since dealt with some algae problems, mainly BBA, but hopefully that will subside as things settle in. Since the last time I also picked up a couple of male German Blue Rams and fit in really nicely in this tank and also added to my school of Corys. The last NACU meeting I went to they had some manzanita they were selling for cheap so I picked some of that up and rescaped my tank today. It took way longer than I though it was going to, but it turned out pretty good, still not thrilled about the wood position, but it was the best I could do for right now.

Santa brought some fun fish stuff this Christmas! I got a 2x55 Watt Bright Light Kit from AH Supply (ahsupply.com), found a used 29 gallon with black stand, and broke down both my 20 and 25 gallon tanks to put this together. I built a matching canopy out of 1/2 inch MDF board and installed the power compacts right into it with the ballast. It fits perfectly with the tank empty but when it has water in it the tank bows about an 1/8 inch on each side which makes a little gap, but it is hardly noticeable. I had to catch about 65 shrimp out of my 20 to put them into the 10 gallon apistogramma tank (now empty) in order to make it work. I sold the embers and rummynose tetras and so the stocking of this tank is:

So we did some research and decided to get some Multies in here. We found someone in Salt Lake who bread these guys and sold us some for really cheap to start our own colony. We also bought 4 bushynose plecos. It is fun that she is getting so excited about this stuff. Here are some pics of her setting it all up. We bought a bunch of shells from local craft stores and playsand from Home Depot.
<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; I ripped everything out there after having moved the male into the 29 gallon and found 3 little fry that had survived! So in a couple of months I will have 4 apistos that I will be selling. I got rid of all the rock and stuck with one piece of driftwood and only using three species of plants this time to keep it simple. HC, Rotala Indica and Microsword. Thinking about maybe adding something to the back, maybe some blyxa japonica, but that stuff might get to big...I really like how it makes this little 10 gallon look so big. The one female apisto is in there alone (with a stowaway cherry shrimp) and will be putting the male back in in a couple of days.

January 26, 2009

I since have moved the apistos into the new 29 gallon that I setup and thinking that none of the fry survived, put about 65 cherry shrimp and 2 amanos in there. I built a stand to get it off of the dresser and drained most of the water to move it. A couple of days ago we got a couple harlequin rasboras to make it a little more exciting, and we spotted a little tiny apisto hiding in one of the rock caves! Pretty amazing that it survived! Then we watched him find a baby shrimp and eat it. So I know that he is eating well! I thought all of that was pretty cool. Here are some new pictures of the new scape that I did a couple of days ago. I just put a black background on it and it looks a little better, but I think it looks nice, doesn't look like a 10 gallon in these pictures.

December 15, 2009

I was looking closely at the tank the other day after realizing the female had started very yellowish and becoming more and more territorial over a cave she picked out. I reasoned from the reading I had done that there was probably some eggs somewhere in that cave. When I looked closer I saw about 15 tiny little free swimming fry staying close to mommy! It was pretty cool! They are terrific parents and have such great instincts. She isn't too hard on the male too when he gets a little too close. I have heard of many cases where they female will kill male after spawning cause of how protective. I originally got 2 females but put her with the angels after noticing a lot of aggression from the other pair, and she seems to be doing fine, maybe I will get another male and stick him in the angel tank with her. I will try to get some pictures up later or a movie so you can see the little buggers.

November 25, 2009

I finally put some fish in this tank! I also ordered a 6700K bulb and got rid of the 50/50 and also put a 15 watt fluorescent bulb with an old desk lamp that I had to give me 5.1 watts per gallon which should be enough to grow just about anything in here. I used clippings from other tanks to get this started up. I am hoping the HC grows in well. Still haven't figure out what I want to stock the tank with. I have 4 cherry shrimp in here, about to have a bunch of little ones soon. As I only have an HOB filter, I am worried about the Co2 levels in the tank, but with some daily Flourish Excel, I think it should be alright.

My amazing wife let me get another fish tank! I wanted to find something cheap and try to use as much stuff that I had. You always end up spending more than you want though. It is a standard 10 gallon that I took the rim off, with a 36W compact fluorescent 50/50 fixture, HOB filter, 100 watt heater EcoComplete substrate, and DIY Co2. I haven't totally decided what I want to put in here, other than some cherry shrimp. But i think 2 blue rams would be cool too, but that would be a no-no on the cherries if I went that direction. Anyone have any ideas about what to stock this with?

October 31, 2009

Russell Ballihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17681942002415153684noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-462788819802563156.post-1344981425278607682009-10-01T22:45:00.000-07:002009-11-18T00:48:21.427-08:0025 Gallon Planted Angel TankSo I have become a compulsive classified ad checker now, and I found a really good deal on a 25 gallon high tank with an eclipse lid and so my wife let me buy it. I have heard that because of the design of the hoods they aren't great planted tanks, but I decided to do some DIY alterations to get it working. So, I popped a whole in the hood where I had about 4 inches of space and put two spiral compact fluorescents in there and used some PVC to rig an outflow that wouldn't cause surface agitation on the filter. With a Co2 diffusor that I made out of a powerhead and gravel vac, i started getting some pretty good Co2 levels. I moved the growing angelfish from my 20 and brought the corys too, and then a couple weeks later added some Harlequin Rasboras and some bigger ghost shrimp. The guy that I bought the tank from had gravel too, so i layered fluorite in between. I got some malaysian driftwood from someone off of KSL classifieds and it all started to come together for a lot cheaper than my other setup.

November 18, 2009

I got sick of the old scape, so I found some rocks and pulled all of the plants out, and replanted. Everything starts growing in nicely.

So my wife has been wanting me to participate in her blogging activities since we have been married, but I haven't done much so far. I recently got an aquarium for my birthday which

has caused a regression into my childhood. I don't remember how old I was, probably 11 or 12 when i got my first 10 gallon tank. As time went by, I saved up for a 55 gallon and had a pair of angelfish that I tried to breed, but couldn't ever raise the fry. Years went by and I always dreamed of the day when I could knock out a wall in my living room and put a 250 gallon tank. That day still hasn't come, but I can make due. I decided that I wanted to do a planted tank and have done so much reading and research online I thought I would blog about my experience. I started with a simple top fin 20 gallon kit from petsmart that was on sale. Doing it over again I would have bought everything used. Would have saved a lot of money that way, and got the equipment that I really wanted. I got a bag a fluorite, and a 18 inch power compact fluorescent fixture with a 50/50 bulb. I didn't know any better and should have got the 24 inch instead which would have given me 65 watts instead of just 36. But with the hood that came with the tank, it was enough light to get things going at a little less than 3 watts per gallon. I started DIY Co2 running it through my HOB filter. Here is what the tank looked like after it was set up and planted with a couple things I got a petsmart, and a couple other local pet stores.

This is July 10th, 2009

I planted Water Wisteria, Bacopa Carolinia, anacharis, hornwort, anubias, and amazon swords.
